#7 Blog about Technology

Turn up your speakers or put on your headphones and click here for special message regarding this discovery activity.
If your headphones are sleeping, here's the simple message condensed:
"For this thing, simply blog about anything technology related. Yes, it can be anything that relates to technology! You just need to share a few thoughts."
PS: Also be sure add at least one comment to another participant's blog. That's what online communities are all about - connecting and communication. :)

I played around with Site Pal and the Oddcast which are both new technologies. That was very addictive and quite fun. I can see how these characters could be used for staff training or mini-newscasts for library patrons. Of course I need to get back to work, but I was also trying to catch up with my Learning 2.0. since I just started last week and didn't want to get too far behind. The incentive of the mp3 player and the laptop/pda drawing makes learning this stuff fun. The part that is scariest for me is that I don't have time for all of this cool stuff, but I love learning it1

Am I the only one that thinks that talking chick was a little creepy? Especially the thing she did with her eyes at the end, eeek!!!!
By
Lori , at 1:12 PM
Mac I know a lot of middle-aged converts to technology. You just have to find the stuff that appeals to you. That's the great thing about the 23 things, there is always something new to try. And no one says we have to be good at them, love them, or even like them--all we have to do is try them.

Sitepal.com was interesting but for me, coming from a gamer's perspective I found the talking avatar distracting. Most online gamers do not like NPC's that talk. (Non-player characters) That's because we usually are thinking about something else while the person is speaking and are just waiting for them to finish so we can move on to the next quest or what ever. It sounds too much like a commercial to me. IMHO (In my humble opinion.)
By
Anonymous, at 6:51 PM
In reference to the previous comment. However when players themselves speak that is a different matter. It just when you know that it's a computer generated NPC you tend to ignore it speaking.

I wrote about Audacity - which I downloaded and have just started playing with. I think it should allow me to manipulate audio that I put on a website.

I think the Site Pal Avatar can be used effectively for auditory learners, but the character resembles one from a graphic novel with attitude. The face is a little discombobulating.

I found flickr interesting but I don't see me having the time to explore and use it. I have downloaded Picassa at home and find that excellent for my needs.

For the most part, I have found this an exercise in frustration.

I am very much enjoying having the opportunity to explore all these features and functions, some of which I had heard of, but didn't know anything about - and others that I had never even heard of.
However, another side of me is wondering about all these ever-expanding and, dare I say, invading technologies, that almost seem to be taking over our lives. I am spending more and more time each day, both at work and at home, in front of a computer screen and, yes, I acknowledge that I can achieve much/learn much/discover much - BUT, there are still only 24 hours in a day, so what am I not doing now that I used to do? Pinned to my noticeboard is a quote by John Burroughs, "I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see." It is my mantra and the pessimistic side of me wonders whether the current generation will be the poorer for maybe never even experiencing that sentiment, let alone having time for them in their "technology-driven" lives.
Having shared those musings, I will still continue, enthusiastically, with Learning 2.0 - at least I will have a better understanding about what my students are referring to, when they drop some of these terms!

I'm in Melbourne, Australia and I'm doing 23 things so I can see what it's like and then get my library staff to do it. I think some of them will be a bit overwhelmed by all the technology but its a great learning experience!!

I am in Melbourne Oz and want to adopt "Anonymous's" mantra! However, this is a great learning curve, but I feel I am skimming the surface which hopefully will lead to more..if I have the time!!...

I'm afraid this is just proving I am not a tech-head.
By
Joeblogg, at 11:52 PM
Most of this is very difficult for me. I enjoyed the name of the poster Mac's Required Blog, sometimes that is how I feel. I really think that anyone who comes into the library and wants to post to a blog, etc, will probably already know much more about it than I will and won't be needing my help.
By
lovetotravel, at 3:21 PM
Mac,
Like you I am also not a tech lover. But I think that we have to live with them and it is worth trying at least some of them that we noticed in our work environment.

Site pal was fun to play with. I suggest they add a Jane Austen look alike character, it will be most popular.
I am thrilled I am able to download audio books from my public library on my MP3 and take them with me on vacations (always with extra batteries for those long books ...)

I setup a Flickr acct. earlier today. I'm still waiting for the photos to post to the outside world. I included an mpg with the photos, and I'm very interested to see if an mpg will open in Flickr.

We just posted a photo using flickr and wish formal training would be available for technology is hard to keep up with. It is like learning a new language and for this dog it is not easy.

Come over and take a look at my pretty face at cooper sez! I learned that photos must be smaller than 1 mb to upload due to space limitations.

Done my #7, written abut technology, putting a comment on a blog! Actually, this is a lot of fun and i used the flickr spelling tool to put up a different blog title. Thanks for setting this all up.

I think this would be great training for our lib staff as well.

The one I looked up had a lisp and I kept being drawn to her mouth that didn't actually match the speakers. It was quiet bizarre actually.

I came to this website as a library student in a workshop on Internet Resources. This was a very interesting assignment. I made a magazine cover with my dog on it for fun. There just seems to be so many things to do with computers, and now it seems to be expanding exponentially, especially the hybrid things like mash-ups. I can see how people lose hours playing online with this kind of thing. I looked at some pretty cool photographs - very professional looking!

My thoughts on technology keep coming back to the idea that a good way to learn technology- seach engines, metasearch engines, blogs etc.- is to start by searching for your favorite topics and interests. New technologies may be a challenge at first, but when you have some fun with it - next thing you know you're on your way!

About the most technological thing I'm involved in is the use of my new Wacom tablet and learning Corel's Painter X program. I have recently become addicted to digital painting, which is very similar to actually painting on a real canvas. I am amazed by the technology of this software program.

I haven't explored as much as I would like to, but a little bit every day and it really can be fun, as long as I don't get to frustrated with my lack of patience, trial and error.
It sure is nice to read of others who feel the same as I.

Being in the public library field, I am very aware of some of the stuff people post on social netwoking websites which may come back to haunt them when they apply for a job in the future. I just read that Virginia is the first state to mandate Web safety lessons. I am all for freedom of speech, but I think that this is a good idea. Some people do not understand the implications of certain content placed on the web.

Keep on learning! (it beats "keep on truckin'"

All this technology is fascinating but I easily get lost in it at times. I wonder if I will ever use alot of this technology in the future.

As a library studies student I am finding this Learning 2.0 journey an interesting one. I am finding that the technology available on the web is just mindblowing. Who knows what else I will discover along the way. :-)

I ran across last Saturday that even though I have a iPod I now knowing about them yet. I had a customer come and ask me how he goes about putting the music he just purchased on his iPod. Well the only thing I have done with my iPod is put music from a CD to the iPod but I was willing to have a look and see if I could do so easy enough. Oh was I wrong. I had no clue how to do so from the Apple iPod screen. So I went off to find someone that might now how to help us. I asked one of my coworkers if he knew and he said he wasn't familiar with them either but he would give it a try too. He was use to the MP3 players and was able to discover how to put the music on the iPod like he would the MP3 player. Wow I need to start playing with my iPod so I know how everything is done because they really don't come with instruction there on the internet only. And I haven't played much with my husbands MP3 player either.
My 2 1/2 yr old son can already turn his TV on and push the button to make the DVD pop out. He also already knows how to hold the DVD so as not to get it dirty, it still happens though.

I agree with the individuals who thought sitepal looks fun. It's amazing how much creative control we can have using online tools.

While reviewing Flickr I found Flickr Colr Pickr. This tool could be used by designers, artists, and people who like to do crafts. I liked the different colors it offers. After clicking on one color, the site brings up several different pictures of things which have the same color. The colors to choose from are blue, purple, red, orange, yellow, and green. By moving the dial the color palette will change color options. Some colors will become brighter others darker. You can also click on the images associated with the color palette. The tool also has a feature that allows you to right a blog. It was fun getting to know Flickr Colr Pickr.

I am a librarian here in the UK and a small group of us (many, like me, slightly bewildered...) are looking at this "new" stuff and thinking of ways of using some of it in our libraries (not sure how yet.)There seems very little out there to look at which is being used or experimented with here in the UK. Once again, we look to our American counterparts!

I played around with photoshop elements this week and actually was surprised by all that comes with the free download. I was able to manipulate images and add details. All in all...well worth the time.

Having grown up in the computer age, social networking technology has never been one of my strong suits. But, after learning and exploring it a bit more in-depth, it certainly is exciting to catch up a bit on this new technology, which is here to stay for better or worse.
